I don’t think I’ve ever felt genuine sadness about a store closing before. Actually, sorry thats a lie. I felt extreme sadness when the American Girl Doll store closed down at the Grove two years go. Fun fact- my mom pulled me out of school in the third grade and I was the first child to visit the store when it opened. I got a hat and was featured in their newsletter. It was one of the best days of my life. Anyway.. I digress.
As you may have seen me announce on IG or TikTok, Peress in NYC is closing down next month- on August 15th to be exact after 68 years in business. I’m unsure of the exact discounts offered and how much more they’ll be going down in pricing in the coming weeks. Officially, the whole store is 30% off the marked price with some of the more expensive slippers 50% off. As of last week the cashmere socks were still $40, cotton nightshirts were 50% off and slippers were $145-$270 (still high).
For those unfamiliar with the store, its a wonderful lingerie and sleepwear store located on the upper east side on Madison Avenue and has been open since 1955. The owner is wonderful man named Herbert Peress - just look at this video on their site to understand what type of store it is and who owns it. I wont lie, the video made emotional. And thats because I realized there IS something emotional about this closure. The store itself is a dying breed, a time capsule of the ancient upper east side society that has been calling in their Peress orders since the store opened in 1955.
I stumbled upon the store a few years ago as I was walking down Madison Avenue, one of my favorite places to be in the city. When I got my gingham pink slippers in March from them, everyone went wild, and continued to go wild when I posted about them on TikTok. Now why am I blasting this, and why am I so passionate about this store? I don’t really know- I just know its my visceral duty to share about the things I love, that evidently many of you love as well.
To honor this store and their closure, I wanted to share my shopping guide to Peress NYC, which many have been asking for. They are open from Monday- Saturday ( think closed on Sunday based on what I’ve heard). They still have stock and take phone orders as well for those not in NYC (800) 872-6336)- although need to check if they ship.
Let me know if you go and what you get!! RIP Peress, you’ll be so missed.
The Slippers:
I never really knew that grandma slippers were my thing until a) Peress and b) I had a pair. Peress has some amazing slippers- I’m eyeing the pink quilted ones and as you can see (far right) they also make their own. GOODBYE Ugg slippers- HELLO grandma slippers. I will say, Peress is tight on sizes so I’ll share some pairs below you can buy direct in case they don’t have any!
The PJ’s:
I love all things striped PJ’s and have been eying the mens shirts and shorts since my last visit (might have to do a phone order). Personally love a boxer short in the summer for lounging or for going out- and they make a great present for the actual men of your life! They have many great PJ’s for both men and women but for some reason I was drawn more to the men’s versions. For more of a Doen vibe, Peress also has amazing cotton nightgowns for women- I think they’d be so chic to wear out without the robe they come with!
The Socks:
The little sock house is perhaps the cutest thing in the whole store. As I have gotten older, I’ve grown to really appreciate an amazing pair of cashmere socks- especially in the winter. I would not pass up the socks - the polka dot ones are also amazing and both make a great gift!!
The Robes:
I LOVE their robes. I find them so lux and definitely would be something I would prioritize to buy on sale. A little gift of one of the robes and socks or slippers personally would be a dream to give to someone. You could even get the robe embroidered (elsewhere) with your initials- would be perfect!
My Peress Shopping Regrets:
If I were to go shopping before they closed, here’s what I’d buy: an actual cotton PJ set (I love the polka dots), Hanky Panky undies because they are the best (if they are on sale enough), a cotton nightgown and matching robe, and one of their bra’s. Also, can’t forget about the cashmere socks, I probably would just wait until they go to their furthest sale as they are still priced a bit high (J Crew has cheaper cashmere sock alternatives at this point that I love deeply).
ugh i went yesterday and they had already sold out of everything i wanted in my size!
This place looks amazing, you paid lovely homage 💜 it is sad that such a unique place is closing 🙁
